Rediscovery of the past

Sunday, September 24th, 2006

May 31, 2004: I’ve never felt such peace in the past few months of chaos… if only time could freeze for a little more than the split second of a camera flash.

I used to write my innermost thoughts and feelings in another blog that i shared with only one other person. I recently came by it again, and i read through everything. It was nostalgic. No, it was more than just nostalgic. We stopped writing in it after a while, but that was a mistake. Things could have been very different today otherwise, and i mean for the better.

I put another entry in, just for old times’ sake. I wonder if that will get read.

Anyhow, I’m off to a 5-day dive trip in redang tomorrow. I remember the last time I went for a dive trip, it was quite emotional. That was slightly more than 2 years ago, in March of 2004. I was at a serious crossroads in my life, and I had to make time to think through a huge decision about a relationship I was in that had lasted almost 6 years then. Funny that a dive trip that was supposed to be a holiday break this year would turn out possibly similar, except with different company.

Well maybe it’ll do me some good. :)

Hope - that’s all I’ve got

Sometimes, I feel like i’m trudging on miserably, heading towards the end of a road that seemingly doesn’t end. Searching for the pot of gold at the end of the rainbow in the middle of a drought. Aiming for an end that somehow, pathetically, doesn’t look like it’s anywhere near within sight.

Do not litter. Fine $500.

Singapore should learn from this. Buzz-generating advertising that drives a message, and gets people talking about it. Compare this to our “Keep Singapore Clean and Green” campaign. Urgh.

Speaking of quality advertising, I’ve seen a lot in the States, but hardly more than one or two in Singapore. Radio is especially a huge culprit of poor, boring advertising. I always liked listening to radio when I was in Silicon Valley, always getting some laughs out of some advert each day on the way to work. In Singapore? Not likely to happen.

Anyway… back to the Do Not Litter advert below. :)

Good old days

Friday, September 15th, 2006

Stupid Weichu just made me think about the good old days. I really miss them. So much, I could cry. It feels like such a contrast now. For the record, everyone’s working, but me - i’m still stuck in PGP in another cluster.

Except, the people here walk past you and ignore you. Especially the guy who lives right opposite me! Even after I smile and say hi so many times!

The Miniature Earth

Thursday, September 14th, 2006

What if Earth was shrunk down to 100 people, while keeping the same proportions of religion, ethnicity, wealth, etc, that we have today?

This is definitely worth 5 minutes of your time. The Miniature Earth.

(really, I’m just trying to earn some karma points)

Upgraded power

Sunday, September 10th, 2006

Yes, now it’s a Power2Book G4 that I have. With 2 x 1GB ram powering it, God, you have no idea how much I can run without any lag.

QuickSilver, 1 movie, 3 browsers (Firefox, Flock & Safari), IntelliJ IDEA Java IDE, Photoshop, Textmate, Transmit FTP, NetNewsWire (my RSS reader), Address book, iSync (for syncing data continuously between my phone, my computer and the www), Mail, Adium, Preview (for all my PDFs), Stickies (postit notes for the Mac), Excel, Word, VideoLAN (video player), SmartSVN (Development file synchronization), iPhoto and iTunes. All at one go. Beat that. :P

Cost me $370, but it was all worth it! Plus I’ll get a little back from the sale of my 2 x 512MB RAM pieces. It’s up for grabs! Anyone wants it? Drop me a comment.

Kids write the darnest things!

Every year, English teachers from across the country can submit their collections of actual analogies and metaphors found in high school essays. These excerpts are published each year to the amusement of teachers throughout the land.

Here are last year’s winners…

  1. Her face was a perfect oval, like a circle that had its two sides gently compressed by a Thigh Master.
  2. His thoughts tumbled in his head, making and breaking alliances like underpants in a dryer without Cling Free.
  3. He spoke with the wisdom that can only come from experience, like a guy who went blind because he looked at a solar eclipse without one of those boxes with a pinhole in it and now goes around the country speaking at high schools about the dangers of looking at a solar eclipse without one of those boxes with a pinhole in it.
