Womad hits from Google

Tuesday, August 29th, 2006

Google works in strange ways. I’ve been getting lots of hits to my blog from the recent Womad 2006 @ UCC post I wrote, and turns out - that page is in the top 10 search results when you google for “Womad 2006″!

I wonder why…

Someone’s living my dream…

111,000 miles, 73 countries, 1 woman, 1 motorcycle, 1 world.

You go, girl. I salute you.

Did i miss out on $100,000?

Saturday, August 26th, 2006

A chance encounter with Mel Gibson in a Malibu bar will likely turn into a major moneymaker for the three vacationing friends who snapped photos of the apparently pie-eyed movie star.

Todd Hausberger, the 29-year-old Phoenix resident who was frolicking at Moonshadows that night with high school buddies Kimberly Lesak, 29, and Julie Smith, 27, has been told that the three stand to make between $80,000 and $120,000 from the sale of the photos.

WOMAD 2006 @ UCC

Saturday, August 26th, 2006

I went for one of the fringe events for WOMAD 2006 held at the University Cultural Center on Thu. There were two performances:

First was a ethnic song and dance by the Musafir Gypsies of Rajasthan, a group from the western deserts of India (left).

The dance was energetic and unbelievable, but the music (unfortunately) was so-so, because I don’t really appreciate Indian music - not my cup of tea.

How to get anything you want

Saturday, August 26th, 2006

One of the greatest lessons I’ve learnt about succeeding in anything was from a lady who had no business experience whatsoever. Today, I wonder if she learnt more from me, or vice versa.

She was organizing and preparing for an event the next day, but things weren’t going right. Stuff that had to be bought wasn’t bought, some rentals didn’t work out, and two of her volunteers didn’t turn up as they promised. She was going crazy, and you could see she was really, really overwhelmed. Things were looking pretty desperate, and I proposed we scale down the event requirements. She refused - it was her baby and she wanted it to go really well.

Travelling by air?

Thursday, August 24th, 2006

For most of us, air tickets constitute a majority expense when we travel. You just can’t escape it - unless you decide to walk or sail from Singapore to London.

What makes it worse is that the cost of air tickets fluctuate ridiculously, even more so that the price of oil! Ok, maybe I’m exaggerating, but you get the point. Sure, you can scan all the travel sites like Expedia or Orbitz, but that doesn’t tell you anything about the possibility that the price of those tickets are gonna drop by a hundred bucks barely one day after you purchase those tickets.

Your online desktop - Netvibes

Thursday, August 24th, 2006

Finally, an app that shows us the true power of web 2.0 - Netvibes. A company that just won $15 million in funding, its potential really shows.

Think Netvibes as a cross between a RSS browser, a Web 2.0 site aggregator, Mac OS X’s dashboard, and your browser’s start page. It is super Web 2.0 friendly, allowing you to add all kinds of Web 2.0 modules to your “dashboard”, such as Flickr, delicious, and also allows you to track your GMail and eBay listings. You can add new tabs (new “dashboards”), and there are already 300+ modules you can add right now!

The key differentiator is the Netvibes ecosystem - there’s an API that allows anyone to add any modules they want to the ecosystem, and thus, works somewhat just like Apple’s dashboard. You use Billmonk, maybe, but there isn’t a module? Well, get them to come up with a Billmonk module, or just do it yourself using provided APIs!

With my world getting increasingly online, Netvibes is exactly what I need. You should check it out too.

What’s free to an Entrepreneur?

Wednesday, August 23rd, 2006

I recently heard someone say:

Entrepreneurs don’t fail - they just run out of cash.

And indeed, that’s very true. Everything costs money - your website hosting, website design, namecards, stock photos, software. Even invoicing your customers cost money! But thank God for the Internet! With free resources abound, all you need is to know where to look.

Geoengineering and 3D screens

Wednesday, August 23rd, 2006

It’s amazing what we can do to change the world. Except this time, I literally mean change the world.

Some guy with a lot of clout has suggested spraying stinky sulphur into the upper atmosphere to reflect more sun. Interesting :)

In other news, the first 3D monitor is born. No need for 3D glasses here. I can so imagine the possible ventures this can have. *dreams*

Ah, humans, always revolutionary in changing the way the world works (both artifically and naturally).
